Why should our school get involved?
Cycling helps children gain independence, social skills and a sense of wellbeing. After Bikeability training children are better at responding to risk and report increased confidence. Get Cycling in Schools is not only helping children to be healthier and happier, but also giving them access to a form of sustainable transport that will empower them throughout their life.
The Get Cycling programme supports their fundamental movement skills and fosters a love of cycling from a young age. The lessons also develop their cycling ability so they are ready to take on Bikeability Levels 1 and 2 in Key Stage 2.
The training for your staff is free of charge, and in addition you will receive a fleet of six balance bikes and helmets for your school to keep.
As well as helping your pupils develop their cycling ability, the training also gives your teaching staff a brand new skill. The training is engaging and interactive and has been extremely valuable for all the schools and teaching staff who have taken part. We have received lots of positive feedback on the training, a selection of which is below.
How can we take part?
The Get Cycling in Schools programme involves training a number of your teaching staff up to equip them with the skills to teach your pupils how to ride. To make sure it is a success, we need a few things from you.
Staff commitment
We will train one to two staff members – teachers or teaching assistants. The training for teaching staff involves half a day of practical training, supplemented by a 60-minute eLearning module. The training is supported by resources included printed activity booklets and lessons plans, along with a fleet of cycles for the children to use. The training and the cycles are free of charge.
Space to cycle
You will need to be able to provide a traffic-free setting, such as a playground, for pupils to learn to cycle throughout the school year. Participating schools must commit to incorporate ‘Get Cycling’ into their curriculum.
Recording information
To ensure we are providing the best training, and reaching as many children as possible, we need regular updates about the cycle training taking place at your school. To do this, participating staff will be registered on our database to record the number of pupils that have been taught to cycle. They will receive full instructions on how and when to do this.
Cycle maintenance
As part of the scheme, your school will be provided with 6 balance bikes and helmets, free of charge. The balance bikes will need to be kept in good working order and stored appropriately. We have guides on how to do this to support your teaching staff to look after the cycles. We reserve the right to reclaim any cycles that are not being used.
